Ten Truths About Recovery

Recently I met Steve Moffitt via a phone appointment.  While we were talking he was telling me about these ten recovery truths he had written. I asked him to read them to me and after he read a few of them I asked him to send them to me.  I asked his permission to share them with you, our blog readers.  I’d love to know what you think of them.  Take a look and then post a comment- do these ring true to you regarding your own recovery as a Christian?

The Ten Truths By Steve Moffitt

  1. Breakthrough is possible by faith in God through believing and following Jesus Christ, and by the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings.32 And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 (NLT)

  1. We must come to an awareness that what we have been doing up till now has not been working for us, and have a willingness to humble ourselves and be open to learning new ways that will work for us – God’s ways.

For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c]For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. Romans 7:18-20 (NIV)

  1. A heart opened in complete surrender and submission to God leads to a life yielded to God’s will and direction – this is vital to our breakthrough.

And so, dear brothers and sisters,[a]I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him.[b]Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:1-2 (NLT)

  1. Whatever our hurts, behaviors, or addictions may be, they are all simply manifestations of a spiritual battle going on within us and around us – a battle that is part of an ongoing war between God and Satan for our souls.

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NIV)

  1. Regardless of what has happened to us, we always have a CHOICE in how we react to it, knowing that what might have been meant for bad can be turned to good as we let God take control of those areas.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, and sisters,[a]whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance James 1:2-3 (NIV)

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who[i]have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (NIV)

  1. God’s Word, revealed to us through scripture, sound Biblical teaching, and revelation of the Holy Spirit is the foundation for our breakthrough.

16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.17 God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NLT)

  1. Thrivers are not “in recovery,” because recovery implies returning to a previous state that was better. Thrivers move forward to become who God intended them to be before their destiny was interrupted by their hurt, addiction, etc. THrivers seek to be RESTORED!

12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection. But I press on to possess that perfection for which Christ Jesus first possessed me. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it,[d]but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:12-14 (NLT)

  1. Unhealthy behaviors, attitudes, and patterns can be overcome as we learn to walk in integrity and allow the Holy Spirit to produce godly character in us.

22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23

  1. God has given us gifts and talents – we must use what He has given us to help others, to be good stewards in all areas of our lives, and to turn our focus from self to service.

10 Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV)

10. We must have someone who sets an example of the victorious life we want, to be accountable to. It is important to have a healthy support system. Then as we grow in our walk, we can, in turn, provide support to others. Mutual support and mentorship is a foundation of the victorious life.

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed.10 If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 (NLT)

Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. Galatians 6:2-3 (NLT)
