Living well when life doesn’t get fixed

A topic series for your Fresh Hope group. Five seasons, six episodes each. Every episode takes on one belief about suffering and answers it from Scripture, so your group can talk about what usually goes unsaid.

Season 1: six myths, six truths

Each episode runs about nine minutes. Watch them yourself before you bring them to your group.

Episode 1In Spite of the NewsJob 1:20–22

“If my faith were strong enough, this wouldn’t be happening.”

Faith was never a shield against the news. It’s what holds you the day the news comes.

Episode 2In Spite of the BlameJohn 9:1–3

“This is happening because of something I did.”

God is not settling a score with you. Your pain is not a punishment.

Episode 3In Spite of the Silence2 Corinthians 12:8–9

“If God loved me, He would have fixed this by now.”

His love is not measured by what He removes.

Episode 4In Spite of the ShameRomans 8:38–39

“I have to get better before I’m worth loving.”

You were loved before the diagnosis. Nothing about it changed His mind.

Episode 5In Spite of the PromiseJohn 16:33

“Following Jesus should have made life easier.”

He promised His presence, not your exemption.

Episode 6In Spite of the RelapsePsalm 88

“A setback means we’re doing something wrong.”

A setback is not a verdict. Living well was never the same as getting better.

What you’ll find in each season’s folder

Open the Drive folder and choose the season you’re running. Each season has its own subfolder.

The Participant Workbook

Six sessions with questions for both chairs and room to write. Share it with your group, or print it.

The Facilitator Edition

Timings, a welcome script, what to do when someone breaks down, and a written crisis protocol. This one is for you.

How to run a session

Seventy-five minutes, one episode a week, six weeks per season. You need a room (or a Zoom with breakout rooms) and two people willing to lead.

A small group talking together in a bright room
  1. 5 minWelcome and opening prayer.
  2. 10 minCheck-In. Everyone shares their mood (1–5) and how full their Hope Tank is. Read the four Community Guidelines aloud.
  3. 15 minWatch the episode together, then go over the key points.
  4. 30 minTwo rooms. One for those living with the challenge, one for those who love them.
  5. 15 minRegroup. Each person names one step. Close in prayer.
What is said in the split room stays in the split room. The regroup shares the step, never the conversation. Someone who is both chooses their room each week.

Before your first session

If someone in your group is struggling

Your Facilitator Edition has the full protocol. Keep these crisis lines close, too.

In the moment

If someone talks about harming themselves, stay with them, stay calm, and do not leave them alone. Follow the crisis protocol in your Facilitator Edition. If life is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
