{"id":3746,"date":"2018-03-07T15:30:38","date_gmt":"2018-03-07T21:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pastorbrad.blog\/?p=3746"},"modified":"2018-03-07T15:30:38","modified_gmt":"2018-03-07T21:30:38","slug":"we-are-not-all-the-same-how-bipolar-disorder-varies-from-person-to-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/we-are-not-all-the-same-how-bipolar-disorder-varies-from-person-to-person\/","title":{"rendered":"We Are Not All the Same: How Bipolar Disorder Varies from Person to Person"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s essential to recognize living with bipolar disorder is a different experience for every person, with complexities such as\u00a0co-occurring disorders.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bphope.com\/bringing-bipolar-into-focus\/\">Bipolar disorder<\/a>\u00a0differs from person to person.\u00a0 The same medicines do not work for all of us, nor do we all even have the same type of bipolar.\u00a0 The issues of mental health recovery are very complex.\u00a0 So, the \u201c<em>things<\/em>\u201d that have worked for me might not work for you. This is why we need one another.\u00a0 Corporately, we have answers for one another as we encourage each other and share what \u201c<em>works<\/em>\u201d for us as individuals living well in spite of our bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<p>When you and I connect with one another, we empower each other to live well in spite of any possible daily battles with our disorder.\u00a0 Individually, no one of us has all the answers.\u00a0 But, together we have solutions for one another.\u00a0Corporately we have answers for one another as we encourage each other and share what \u201cworks\u201d for us as individuals in living well in spite of our bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3 style=\"text-align:center;\"><strong><em>It always concerns me when everyone is talking about mental illness\/health and over-generalizing it, simplifying it to the point where everyone is lumped together.<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>By doing this, the public is not even beginning to understand the complexities and challenges for each individual dealing with their particular life\u2019s situation and experiences, plus having a mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Some of us have only one diagnosis; bipolar disorder.\u00a0 Others of us have the complexity of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bphope.com\/bipolar-buzz\/the-top-co-occurring-medical-conditions-related-to-bipolar-disorder\/\">\u00a0co-occurring disorders<\/a>\u00a0which some now are calling \u201c<em>complex<\/em>\u201d instead of co-occurring.\u00a0 Just bipolar disorder in and of itself is enough to make life very complex at times. But, add on top of that a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bphope.com\/blog\/what-is-the-difference-between-borderline-personality-disorder-bpd-and-bipolar-disorder\/\">borderline personality disorder, <\/a>and now it\u2019s even more complicated.\u00a0 As I watch friends of mine who have a personality disorder, lots of child trauma and bipolar disorder, I have come to know that their struggle for wellness is compounded many times over as they strive to live well in spite of several mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, I believe there are some general \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bphope.com\/bipolar-buzz\/bipolar-life-4-things-to-improve-your-life-today\/\"><em>living-well<\/em><\/a>\u201d principles that are true for most, if not all, of us. I\u2019d like to share a few of them.\u00a0 This list is not exhaustive, but some of the \u201cprinciples\u201d that I believe may be universal to us all:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>In order to achieve some level of wellness in our lives, you and I must be disciplined to do those things that move us toward wellness and keep us well.\u00a0<\/strong>This is a choice.\u00a0 As much as I hate to be disciplined, I choose to discipline myself daily to live well in spite of bipolar disorder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>To live well, you and I need other people in our lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>You and I are made for community.\u00a0 Isolating will not help any of us to live well. If you have alienated all of the people in your life and are alone, then I strongly encourage you to seek out a certified\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bphope.com\/group-psychoeducation-offers-early-intervention-for-bipolar-patients\/\">peer support\u00a0<\/a>specialist and\/or a peer-led mental health support group and\/or group therapy led by a professional therapist. You need other people.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>To live well, you and I must be committed to some of the hardest work we will ever do in our lives.\u00a0<\/strong>Living well in spite of bipolar plus any other issues you might face is\u00a0But, it\u2019s worth it. \u00a0It\u2019s a difficult job that sometimes must be done moment by moment, day by day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To live well, you and I must have hope for our future, or we will give up.\u00a0<\/strong>Hopelessness comes about when someone believes they have no future.\u00a0 Choosing to believe that your life has purpose and meaning is key to overcoming hopelessness.\u00a0 If you are a person of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bphope.com\/on-faith-and-bipolar-recovery\/\">faith<\/a>, then this is where your conviction becomes key.\u00a0 Faith gives hope because it says that life, each life, has meaning and purpose.\u00a0 Person of faith or not, your life is essential.\u00a0\u00a0Your life has meaning. Out of the pain and hurt of your life, you have the power to empower others by just telling your story.\u00a0 Telling your story to others who are also on this journey gives your life purpose.\u00a0 That\u2019s a future. And that gives hope.\u00a0 Never give up. Each of us needs you. You hold some answers for some of us in our journey towards wellness.<\/li>\n<li><strong>To live well, you and I have to choose to look for the golden nuggets in the \u201c<em>poo-piles<\/em>\u201d of life\u00a0<\/strong>(<em>Of course, there\u2019s another way to spell \u201cpoo\u201d but, I am going to stay with \u201cpoo\u201d<\/em>). There\u2019s a lot of \u201c<em>poo<\/em>\u201d in life. No one gets through life without pain and brokenness to varying degrees. When you and I let go of our expectations of life, it allows us to find the \u201cgold nuggets,\u201d the silver linings, even in the most difficult of times. Part of doing this means that you and I must never lose our sense of humor\u00a0about how goofy life and others can be!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, I offer these five principles to wellness that I believe are some of the foundational principles of a life of wellness.\u00a0 They are simple.\u00a0 But, so very important and challenging to do at times.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to hear your input regarding them.
