{"id":18589,"date":"2026-03-05T09:25:41","date_gmt":"2026-03-05T14:25:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/?p=18589"},"modified":"2026-03-12T17:56:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-12T22:56:13","slug":"what-is-resiliency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/what-is-resiliency\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Resiliency?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I used to think that resiliency meant bouncing back after experiencing something difficult. But I\u2019m starting to wonder if it\u2019s less about bouncing and more about staying, or even moving forward, however slowly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBouncing back\u201d implies returning to who I was before the difficult thing. I picture an old inflatable punching clown, that pops right back up after I hit it.\u00a0 But what if it\u2019s more about becoming someone new because of the hard thing? The baseline has shifted \u2013 the person I was is not the person I am now, on this side of difficulty. What if it\u2019s bouncing forward, becoming someone wiser, and more compassionate because of what I\u2019ve walked through?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One definition of resiliency is \u201cthe ability to adapt, recover, even grow after difficulty, loss, stress or trauma.\u201d It\u2019s not about avoiding pain, but about learning how to live well in the presence of pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doesn\u2019t that sound like the tag line for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresh Hope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? \u201cLearning to live well in spite of a mental health diagnosis.\u201d Hmm. Fresh Hope \u2013 its support groups, its printed materials, its ministries (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/hope-coaching\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hope Coaching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/refocusingwidows.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refocusing Widows (Reenfocando Viudas)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; is about learning to live in resiliency!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many of us, either with a mental health challenge (I had a 10+ year journey through depression), or as someone who loves another who has struggles with their mental health, learning to live in a new reality is very important. Whether that mental health journey is just starting, has been a slog for years, or is in the rearview mirror, the person I was is no longer the person I am. I am changed by that mental health difficulty. I was changed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that difficulty.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience means acceptance without resignation.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accepting that this difficulty is part of my story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Refusing to let it be the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">whole<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples: depression may recur; anxiety may flare; bipolar may cycle \u2013 but I am still: a spouse, a parent, a leader, a friend, a child of God.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience means differentiation.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love myself\/you deeply, but my\/your illness is not my\/your identity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see this in the Fresh Hope Recovery Principles, Tenet 6\u00a0<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Person with the diagnosis) \u201cAt times I have allowed myself to become a victim, &#8220;defined&#8221; by my disorder. Therefore, I choose to overcome and live in hope and joy, in spite of my disorder.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Loved Ones) \u201cTherefore, I choose to separate the disorder from the person I love, forgive and let go of the past, and live as a contributor to successful recovery.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience means emotional flexibility in the face of unpredictability. I may have good days, hard days, setbacks, growth, confusion.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will enjoy the good without clinging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will endure the hard without despair.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience is holding hope without control.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t make another person heal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t force insight.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t guarantee stability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I can: love, pray, encourage, invite, demonstrate my own resilience.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience is post-traumatic growth!<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I came out of my depression experience with greater empathy, spiritual depth, compassion and wisdom.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, the Fresh Hope Recovery Principles, Tenet 7 \u2013 it\u2019s all about taking my circumstances and what I\u2019ve learned, and using that to give back to others, to be a comfort to others, because God has comforted me. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=2%20cor%201%3A4&amp;version=GNT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 Corinthians 1:4<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at this topic of resilience through the lens of God\u2019s Word.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There may not be escape from suffering, but God is present in it.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 34:18 \u201cThe Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.\u201d God moves <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toward<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pain, not away from it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 43:2 \u201cWhen you pass through the waters, I will be with you\u2026When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.\u201d Notice <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Resilience in Scripture assumes hardships are part of life.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hardships bring endurance and growth, and both are part of resiliency.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romans 5:3-5 \u201cSuffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.\u201d This is not saying that suffering is good, but that it can produce something good.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James 1:2-4 \u201cConsider it pure <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/finding-joy-in-2026\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026whenever you face trials\u2026because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.\u201d This is about growth and maturity \u2013 not about emotional denial.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resiliency often includes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/i-will-write-a-lament\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lament<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which says: this is not how things are supposed to be, but I will choose to trust the Lord anyway.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 13:1-2 \u201cHow long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psalm 42:11 \u201cWhy, my soul, are you downcast? &#8230;Put your hope in God.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strength comes from outside of ourselves.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 Corinthians 12:9-10 \u201cMy grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.\u201d Weakness is a place where God works!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Isaiah 40:29-31 \u201cHe gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak\u2026Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is hope in the middle, not just at the end.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lamentations 3:21-23 \u201cYet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord\u2019s great love we are not consumed\u2026\u201d My journal is full of one day of crying out to God, with the next day starting in praise and thanks to Him for getting me through.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hebrews 10:23 \u201cLet us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resilience can be a shared journey\u2026we do this in our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/fh-groups\/find-a-group\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fresh Hope Support Groups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Galatians 6:2 \u201cCarry each other\u2019s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 \u201cTwo are better than one\u2026If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The science behind resiliency points to several things we can do to help us become more resilient. <\/span><b>It can be learned!<\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding meaning and purpose.\u00a0<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh, I found this one so hard! I kept asking God, \u201cWhy? Why am I going through this? When will this stop?\u201d This became my ongoing lament. Until the Holy Spirit prompted me to change the question. Instead of \u201cWhy?\u201d it became, \u201cWhat do You want to teach me in this, Lord?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changing the question then opened the door to meaning\u2026my suffering tied into something God was allowing in my life, for His purpose. I didn\u2019t get to know what the purpose was, not right away, but because I trust Him, I could reframe my question and seek His direction. And in the process, I rested in Him.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Support and Connection.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are created for relationship. With God. With one another. And resilience can grow in a safe, loving connection. It does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grow in isolation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional flexibility.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can hold multiple emotions at the same time:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grief and Hope<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anger and Compassion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear and Courage<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-compassion.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of all that negative self-talk that I say to myself, resilient words are things like:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is hard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m allowed to struggle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m still worthy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realistic Hope.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not denial.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not toxic positivity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the belief that this moment, this season, is not my whole story.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are small daily habits I can practice that help me.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journaling \u2013 my entries are full of laments \u2013 prayers to God where I cry out, complain, and then remind myself of His goodness and sovereignty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prayer and reflection \u2013 these can be breath prayers. This is not about something I do for God, but something I receive from Him.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus, You are here.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lord, have mercy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You are my refuge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/more-on-gratitude\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gratitude<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naming emotions instead of denying or suppressing them. I often write them in my journal, just to get them out of my head and onto paper!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Telling my story.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing support \u2013 letting safe people in, even if it\u2019s imperfect.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resiliency can be learned. It can be practiced. And it grows in community.
