I read it. Then I re-read it. Then I thought about it. BINGO. What a perfect post for Thanksgiving! Why do we need to have a holiday each year to remind us to be thankful for all of the good things in our lives? Shouldn\u2019t that just come naturally? Sometimes it does, sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, studies reveal that negative emotions involve more thinking, and that information is processed more thoroughly than positive ones. \u201cThus, we tend to ruminate more about unpleasant words \u2013 and use stronger words to describe them \u2013 than happy ones,\u201d states Professor Clifford Nass, co-author of <em>The Man Who Lied to His Laptop: What Machines Teach Us About Human Relationships<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as anyone knows who has read Pastor Brad Hoefs\u2019 landmark book, <em><a href=\"\/es\/\"https:>Fresh Hope: Living Well in Spite of a Mental Health Diagnosis<\/a><\/em>, or attended a Fresh Hope support group, all is not lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Far from it. But don\u2019t pay attention to what society says. Our affluence as Americans too often drowns out the everyday blessings in our lives \u2013 like food and shelter \u2013that poor people in Third World countries would love to have. The upcoming Thanksgiving holiday provides a perfect opportunity to change thoughts of selfishness to ones of appreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contemplating \u201cwants\u201d versus \u201cneeds\u201d is a big help for me in this regard. We \u201cwant\u201d a new car. We \u201cneed\u201d transportation. We \u201cwant\u201d a newer, larger house. We \u201cneed\u201d a roof over our heads. We \u201cwant\u201d a kitchen as nice as the one neighbor Bob just redid. We \u201cneed\u201d food in whatever kitchen we do have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You get the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What would our world be like if we paid more attention to \u201cneeds\u201d instead of \u201cwants,\u201d than the associated negativity that comes much more easily to us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being thankful isn\u2019t a one-day thing, it\u2019s a lifestyle. I\u2019m going to give it a try.
