{"id":1547,"date":"2017-07-31T06:17:49","date_gmt":"2017-07-31T06:17:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freshhope.us\/?p=1547"},"modified":"2025-07-04T18:30:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-04T23:30:16","slug":"help-depressed-loved-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/help-depressed-loved-one\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Help a Depressed Loved One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Depression is like quick-sand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Your loved one may be stuck. Stuck with a lack of energy, stuck in loneliness, stuck in isolation, stuck unable to make decisions, stuck and unable to love you well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Depression is a genuine complex brain disease. It may have been triggered by loss, traumatic events past or present, repressed anger and fear, a battered self-esteem, or genetics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Depression is an illness that leaves your depressed loved one feeling helpless and hopeless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">What can you do to help your loved one?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">First, be aware of the symptoms of depression.There may be feelings of emptiness or sadness; feelings of hopelessness and helplessness; difficulty decision-making; sleep problems (insomnia or too much sleep); decreased energy and lack of interest in what were enjoyable activities; thoughts of death or suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">But remember symptoms can vary. Everyone experiences depression differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Secondly, you may feel guilty. You are not responsible for someone else\u2019s mental health. You can\u2019t make someone else change, all that you can be responsible for is yourself.You can\u2019t make someone love you well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">There are positive things you can do to make a difference. Focus on what you can do, not what you can\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Thirdly, <a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/lib\/self-care-for-depression-caregivers\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Take Care Of Yourself<\/span><\/a>. Sometimes if the bout of depression continues for a significant time you can become depressed, too. It is partially the result of your empathy. Your feelings of frustration, anger, your own withdrawal from friends and family, and anxiety can bring on your own depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">That is why it is critical to take care of yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Fourthly, reach out to your support system. You need safe people you can talk to. You need people who listen without judging you or your loved one. You need friends to share with.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You need friends you can socialize with. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A counselor can help you discover healthy coping behaviors to manage your frustration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A good relationship with your doctor is an important part of your support team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Fifthly, learn to have compassion for yourself. Be kind, gentle, forgiving, supportive to yourself. And to your loved one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Finally, here are specific things you can do for your loved one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Advocate for them. Encourage them to get treatment. Realize that you can\u2019t fix this for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Educate yourself on depression, its symptoms and treatments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Be willing to help make counseling appointments and\/or go with them if your loved one is not functional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Be aware this is a complicated disease. Saying things like, \u201csnap out of it\u201d, or \u201cyou are just too negative,\u201d \u201cyour faith isn\u2019t strong enough\u201d will not help. Your loved one does not need these judgments. That just reinforces the depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> If your loved one is suicidal or has hallucinations get them to the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Listen, listen, listen. Even when they are silent,gracefully share the silence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Encourage them. Encourage them to take care of themselves. Remind them to remember their strengths and the difficulties they have previously overcome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Pray for them. Your loved one may not be able to ask for prayer. But know that they need prayer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\"> Affirm them of God\u2019s love and your support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Remember there is hope for your loved one and for you as a caregiver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Here are some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblestudytools.com\/topical-verses\/encouraging-bible-verses\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Bible verses<\/span><\/a> that may give you strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cSo do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. \u201c(Isaiah 41:10)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cFor I know the plans I have for you,\u201d declares the Lord, \u201cplans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.\u201d (Jeremiah 29:11)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cNow to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,\u201d (Ephesians 3:20)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">One day quick sand will become solid ground.
