{"id":1364,"date":"2017-02-17T03:58:48","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T03:58:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/freshhope.us\/?p=1364"},"modified":"2020-06-24T12:54:06","modified_gmt":"2020-06-24T17:54:06","slug":"five-wellness-principles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/freshhope.us\/es\/five-wellness-principles\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Wellness Principles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Bipolar disorder differs from person to person.\u00a0 The same medicines do not work for all of us, nor do we all even have the same type of bipolar.\u00a0 The issues of mental health recovery are very complex.\u00a0 So, the \u201c<em>things<\/em>\u201d that have worked for me; might not work for you. This is why we need one another.\u00a0 Corporately we have answers for one another as we encourage each other and share what \u201c<em>works<\/em>\u201d for us as individually in living well in spite of our bipolar disorder.\u00a0 That\u2019s why sometime ago a few of us started a website called \u201c<strong>What I Did to Recover<\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0 (<em>By the way, I know that the word \u201crecover\u201d can trip people up.\u00a0 For me, the word \u201crecover\u201d simply means that I have taken back my life from the mood monster of bipolar and that I\u2019m living well\u00a0<\/em>[i.e. life has purpose other than just coping]<em>\u00a0in spite of it.<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><em>When you and I connect with one another we empower each other to live well in spite of any possible daily battles with our disorder.\u00a0 Individually, no one of us all the answers.\u00a0 But, together we have answers for one another.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It always concerns me when tragic violent events such as these senseless shootings happen and suddenly everyone is talking about mental illness\/health; but over generalizing it, simplifying to the point where everyone is lumped together and it is all over simplified.\u00a0 \u00a0By doing this, the public is not even beginning to understand the complexities and challenges for each individual dealing with their particular life\u2019s situation and experiences plus having a mental illness.<\/p>\n<p>Some of us have only one diagnosis; bipolar disorder.\u00a0 Others of us have the complexity of co-occurring disorders which some now are calling \u201c<em>complex<\/em>\u201d instead of co-occurring.\u00a0 Just bipolar disorder in and of itself is enough to make life very complex at times. But, add on top of that a borderline personality disorder and now it\u2019s even more complex.\u00a0 As I watch friends of mine who have a personality disorder and lots of child trauma plus bipolar disorder, I have come to know that their struggle for wellness is compounded many times over as they strive to live well in spite several mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, I believe there are some general \u201c<em>living-well<\/em>\u201d principles that are true for most, if not all of us. I\u2019d like to share a few of them.\u00a0 This list is not exhaustive list but some of the \u201cprinciples\u201d that I believe may be universal to all us:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>In order to achieve some level of wellness in our lives you and I must be disciplined to do those things that move us toward wellness in our lives and keep us well.\u00a0<\/strong>This is a choice.\u00a0 As much as I hate to be disciplined, I choose to discipline myself daily in order to live well in spite of bipolar disorder. Choose to be disciplined it works.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>In order to live well, you and I need other people in our lives.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>You and I are made for community.\u00a0 Isolating will not help any of us to live well.\u00a0<u>If you have alienated all of the people in your life and are alone then I strongly encourage you to find seek out a certified peer support specialist and\/or a peer led mental health support group and\/or group therapy led by a professional therapist. You need other people.<\/u><\/li>\n<li><strong>In order to live well, you and I must be committed some of the hardest work we will ever do in our lives.\u00a0<\/strong>Living well in spite of bipolar plus any other issues you might face is\u00a0<strong>HARD<\/strong> But, it\u2019s worth it. But, it\u2019s hard work that sometimes must be done moment by moment, day by day. Recovery is not for sissies! Commit to the hard work, no matter how hard the work gets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In order to live well, you and I must have hope about our future or we will give up.\u00a0<\/strong>Hopelessness comes about when someone believes they have no future.\u00a0 Choosing to believe that your life has purpose and meaning is key to overcoming hopelessness.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you are a person of faith, then this is where your faith becomes key.\u00a0 Faith gives hope because faith says that life, each life, has meaning and purpose.\u00a0 Person of faith or not, your life is important.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Your life has meaning. Out of the pain and hurt of your life you have the power to empower others by just telling your story.<u>\u00a0<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0By telling your story to others who are also on this journey gives your life purpose.\u00a0 That\u2019s a future. And that gives hope.\u00a0 Never give up. Each of us needs you. You hold some answers for some of us in our journey towards wellness. Choose to see the purpose in your life.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong>In order to live well, you and I have to choose to look for the golden nuggets in the \u201c<em>poo-piles<\/em>\u201d of life.<\/strong>(<em>Of course, there\u2019s another way to spell \u201cpoo\u201d but, I am going to stay with \u201cpoo\u201d.<\/em>) There\u2019s a lot of \u201c<em>poo<\/em>\u201d in life. No one gets through life with out pain and brokenness to varying degrees. When you and I let go of our expectations of life it allows us to find the \u201cgold nuggets\u201d, the silver linings, even in the most difficult of times.\u00a0 Part of doing this means that you and I must never loose our sense of human about how goofy life and others can be. \u00a0Choose to find the golden nuggets instead of wallowing in the poo.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, I offer these five principles to wellness that I believe are some of the foundational principles to a life of wellness.\u00a0 They are simple.\u00a0 But, so very important and difficult to do at times.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to hear your input regarding them.
